Kites from Around the World

The Asian kite collection at the World Kite Museum holds special significance as it formed part of the museum’s founding collection, generously donated by renowned kite enthusiast David Checkley. His passion for kite culture, particularly from Asia, helped lay the foundation for the museum’s mission to preserve and share the global history of kite flying.
Checkley’s donation included traditional kites from countries like China, Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia—each reflecting centuries-old craftsmanship, symbolism, and cultural practices. These kites not only showcased the stunning diversity of design and purpose across Asia but also established the museum's international focus from the very beginning.
Thanks to Checkley’s vision and contributions, the World Kite Museum began with a strong emphasis on education, artistry, and cultural appreciation, using kites as a lens to explore the stories and traditions of people around the world. His collection continues to be a cornerstone of the museum’s exhibits, inspiring visitors with the beauty and history of Asian kites.
